How do I know if my hair is damaged?

If your hair's looking like straw, it can be pretty clear that it's not feeling happy, but it may not always be so obvious that your locks are in need of some TLC.  Here are some tell-tale signs you can look out for:

• Your hair looks and feels dull and brittle.  If your hair has lost its natural shine and seems permanently parched and frizzy, it's a sign it's crying out for rehydration.
• You're noticing your hair breaking easily and excess shedding when you brush.  While it's normal to have a few split ends before a trim, if you are noticing your hair splitting so much it breaks, it's a sign it needs help.
• Your hair gets tangled and knotty, especially after washing.  Most people shouldn't need to spend more than a couple of minutes teasing out the tangles after shampooing.
• Your hair colour looks faded or turns brassy.  When hair lacks moisture and nutrients it loses its vibrancy and shine.  Your hair colour pigments can also fade and change colour with sun exposure and environmental pollution.
• Your regular hair care products aren't working as they should.  If your regular conditioning products stop working it could be because your hair is damaged and highly porous.  This means that holes have developed in the hair cuticle , allowing the nourishing ingredients of your conditioner to simply wash away.

Add A Mask To Your Hair Care Routine

Hair masks are deep conditioning treatments which offer intense nourishment to your locks.  They are ideal for restoring dry, weakened hair, which needs help in replenishing its outer protective layer.  They will rehydrate your hair, helping to restore its shine and strength. 

We recommend using a conditioner after every wash, but once or twice a week we suggest using a mask instead of regular conditioner.  You don't need to use both conditioner and a mask at the same time.  A mask is super nourishing on its own and will help to detangle your hair.

We offer  a wide range of L'Oreal and Kerastase hair masks at our Hertford salon.  For highly damaged and over-processed hair, we love the outstanding results from Kérastase Resistance Therapiste Masque.  It has a buttery texture and penetrates deep into the hair to restore its strength and elasticity. It's enriched with amino acids and protein and helps lock in moisture for smooth hydrated locks. 

If you have fine hair you may be wary of masks weighing it down and leaving it lank.  In this case we recommend L'Oreal's Instant Resurfacing Lightweight Golden Mask.  It is designed specifically for fine damaged hair and contains proteins to repair it and enhance shine while leaving no heavy residue.

Refresh Your Hair Colour

You can replace the lost blue colour molecules in your hair and dampen down brassiness by using a professional quality blue or purple shampoo and conditioner.  We recommend the L'Oreal Blondifier range.  This gloss shampoo gently cleanses blonde and highlighted hair, emphasising its shine and multi-dimensional tones.  At the same time the acai berry extracts it contains neutralise unwanted brassy tones, leaving your blonde colour cool and bright.    You could also try Olaplex No 4P, Blonde Enhancer toning shampoo.  This highly concentrated purple shampoo cleanses, tones and repairs, boosting brightness after just one use. 

Book a Hair Glossing Service

A hair gloss is a subtle colouring and conditioning treatment.  It's similar to a toning treatment, comprising a demi-permanent hair colour that help enhance your hair's natural shine while breathing new life into your hair colour.

Once applied to the hair, the gloss perfects, tones, and colour-corrects any hair colour imperfections that have crept in since your last full colour appointment. At our Hertford salon we use the L'Oreal French glossing technique to transform and refresh your hair colour.  This uses Dia Light ammonia free gel to provide a personalised, glossy lengths,  in a wide range of colours.  L'Oreal tests have demonstrated that it leaves the hair with twice the shine and in 30% better condition than alternative colouring services.
